Mucoceles (Cyst) Drainage

Mucoceles are cysts filled with fluid that develop within the sinuses. When the mucoceles are unable to drain properly, the mucus builds up, causing the mucocele to enlarge in size. This can cause symptoms such as:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Headache
  • Vision changes
  • Swelling around the eyes

Mucoceles usually occur in patients with a history of facial trauma or prior nasal/sinus surgery, but they can also occur in patients with no identifiable cause. In some cases, mucoceles can cause severe, serious medical problems that require urgent treatment.

As mucoceles slowly grow , they can cause bone erosion and exert pressure on critical surrounding structures, such as the brain and the eye. Surgery is needed to drain the mucocele and create an opening wide enough to allow long-term drainage of the mucus from the pocket into the nasal cavity.

In the vast majority of cases, this can be accomplished endoscopically through the nostrils, in a manner similar to the way a routine endoscopic sinus surgery would be performed. In rare cases, an external approach may be needed to treat the problem.

Endoscopic sinus surgery for treatment of mucoceles has an excellent success rate, with a very small percentage of cases resulting in recurrence of the mucocele and need for revision surgery.
